Marking a Milestone: The End of Rehab and the Start of Lifelong Health

Marking a major milestone: My last day of cardio rehab! Recovery has been a journey, but this is just the beginning of maintaining lifelong health.

Last week marked my last official day of Cardio Rehab Therapy. For some, it may just seem like a final appointment, but for me, it’s a significant milestone—a testament to the hard work and patience it’s taken to get here. While this marks the end of a structured recovery process, it’s far from the end of my journey. In fact, it’s only the beginning of a new chapter—one focused on maintaining my health through conscious effort, discipline, and regular checkups.

How I Got Here: Lessons Learned from Ignorance

It wasn’t that I was neglecting my health—at least, not in the way you might think. I haven’t touched alcohol since 2020, kicked soda and energy drinks in 2021, and stayed active by walking regularly, playing with my dogs, small hikes along the rivers and lakes. My diet was decent, and I felt pretty good overall. However, the one glaring issue was the absence of something simple: regular doctor visits. I hadn’t been to the doctor in over 10 years (yes, you read that right).

That decision nearly cost me my life.

Had I been more diligent, it’s possible the bacterial infection that attacked my heart would have been caught early and treated with some simple antibiotics. Instead, it led to open-heart surgery—something no one anticipates. I’m now part of the 47,000 people diagnosed with endocarditis in the U.S. each year. It’s not a statistic anyone hopes to be a part of, but it’s my reality now.

Moving Forward: The Road to Lifelong Health

Cardio Rehab Therapy was just the start. I still need to maintain a balanced diet, exercise, and prioritize regular medical checkups. These aren’t just “to-dos” on a list—they are critical components of keeping myself strong and healthy moving forward.

This journey has reminded me how easily we can overlook the basics in the hustle and bustle of life. It’s easy to skip a checkup when you feel fine, but this experience has taught me that being proactive is key to preventing crises.

I learned this lesson the hard way, but you don’t have to. Health maintenance isn’t just for those who feel something is wrong—it’s for everyone. Annual checkups, blood work, and staying on top of your health should be prioritized, even when life is busy. What’s the alternative? Ignoring your health until something serious forces you to face it head-on, like I did. It’s not worth the risk.

A New Outlook: Life Beyond Recovery

Reflecting on the end of rehab, I realize this isn’t about getting back to how things were before—it’s about moving forward with a stronger, more conscious approach to life. I’m embracing the long road ahead, but I’m also determined to stay healthy and live with intention. This experience has given me a second chance, and I plan to use it wisely.

What You Can Do: Be Proactive with Your Health

If there’s anything I hope you take away from my journey, it’s this: Make time for that doctor’s appointment, get your annual checkup, and don’t assume that feeling healthy means you’re in the clear. Health is an ongoing process, not a one-time checkbox.

Take control of your health now so you can enjoy the life you’ve worked hard for. Whether that means finally going to the gym, eating better, or scheduling that long-overdue doctor’s visit, it’s worth it.

After all, we only get one life—and one heart.
